We have lived in five states and 2 countries over the last 20 years, and are preparing for a move to a different state. One thing that we have thoroughly enjoyed about living in Westlake area of Austin, TX is the low crime rate which affects us in a few ways. First, we don't hesitate to shop after dark, and while we are always alert, we don't fret about a walking to our car late at niht. We regularly walk/run our neighborhood without worrying about attacks (we might worry about bumping into a deer or skunk, but we'll take that anyday). Second, when we shop in the area, the store owners can focus their attention on service rather than security. It may sound subtle, but it makes a huge difference in how one is treated in the store. Thirdly, all of the neighbors are out walking in the evening, and there is a much higher sense of friendliness that forms from those impromptu interactions.
