Living in Shishmaref, AK is a unique experience. This small Alaskan Inupiaq community of about 600 people has been around for centuries and its culture is deeply rooted in the subsistence lifestyle of fishing and hunting along with other traditional practices. The landscape is vast and beautiful with snow-capped mountains, rolling tundra, and the Bering Sea to the north. Even though it can be difficult to access goods due to its remote location, it offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. Fishing from a kayak or skiff in the summertime can yield amazing catches of arctic char or salmon, while hiking through the vast wilds of the tundra can be an unforgettable experience. Cold winters bring plenty of snow for sledding and snowmobiling, while spring and summer months are perfect for camping on the beach or exploring nearby islands. Life in Shishmaref will always offer something new and exciting for those brave enough to embrace it!
