Though Lake City is currently weathering the economic miasma far better than the nathional averages in median home price, unemployment, and twice the national average spent per student, the long term outlook is far from promising for this Switzerland like sister city. The local economy has long been dominated by cannibalistic economic practices. Namely, because of the small year 'round population, the local workforce charges the local population outrageous prices for goods and services. In return, those charged the obscene amounts charge others ridiculous amounts for their goods and services and so on and so forth. This creates a downward spiriling effect that is only broken by the yearly infusion of tourists. With the economic downturn predicted to decimate summer visitations in 2009 to our little hamlet, the cannibalistic practices among the local population will increase to an even greater degree making Lake City the economic equivalent of the waters surrounding the U.S.S.
