What BestPlaces Users Say about Columbus

Columbus, Georgia is a city located along the Chattahoochee River in the western part of the state. It is the second largest city in Georgia and has a population of over 200,000 people. Columbus is known for its military history, being home to Fort Benning, as well as its vibrant arts and culture scene. It also boasts a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities in the state.

Summarizing user reviews from BestPlaces.net, many residents praise Columbus for its friendly community, affordable housing, and abundance of outdoor activities. Some reviewers also mention the city's rich history and diverse cultural events. However, some have expressed concerns about the city's crime rate and lack of job opportunities. Overall, the majority of reviewers seem to enjoy living in Columbus and recommend it as a great place to call home.

1. "Columbus is a hidden gem in Georgia. The people here are incredibly welcoming and the cost of living is very reasonable. There are also so many things to do, from hiking and kayaking to attending local festivals. I've been here for 10 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else." - Lauren S.

2. "I moved to Columbus for a job opportunity and have been here for 2 years. While the city itself is beautiful and has a lot of potential, I've noticed a high crime rate and a lack of job diversity. I feel safe in my neighborhood, but I wouldn't recommend walking around certain areas at night." - Mark R.

3. "Columbus is a great place for families. We have excellent public schools and plenty of parks and recreational areas. The community here is very close-knit and there are always fun events to attend. Plus, the cost of living is very affordable." - Melissa K.

4. "I've lived in Columbus my whole life and I love it here. We have a rich history and a strong military presence, which adds to the community's character. The downtown area has really grown in recent years and there are always new restaurants and shops to explore." - David M.

Very nice but hasn鈥檛 realized full potential. - 5/29/2021
I have lived here for 6.5 years. In-town is cute with nice restaurants and sometimes music. It hasn鈥檛 realized it鈥檚 full potential though. Houses are still reasonably priced with many old trees and vegetation.  Read More

just a bunch of racist retarded ass ****s - 11/3/2020
no,nonono NEVER MOVE HERE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. as someone who is almost out of highschool and i can finally go to my homecountry after 10 years of begging to move, never vist here.

i have been raped, held at gunpoint, etc. its only a stable place to live if youre a rich, white, straight, catholic, cisgender man. even then i would never reccomend living here. if you aren't just one if those things, you're going to have a tough time.

i am a eurasian, japanese and german. i love both of my countries, and take pride in them. so much so i had a jacket back when i was in 4th grade with a stitched in german flag. the kids at school would call me horrible words, and a nazi. i called one of them a failed abortion, which was a compliment compared to the stuff i had heard, and i got suspended for a week. they did it for 5 more years.

the schools are a joke, the economys a joke, everything here is bad. it sucks ass. dont move here.

Another town ruined by a 2 term democratic mayor - 9/10/2020
This once beautiful and safe town is now crime ridden and trashy courtesy of Theresa Tomlinson鈥檚 2 terms as mayor. Even if you live in the north end you are no longer safe as she made sure to move people from the projects into the once safe north end of town. So many on government assistance in this town - little opportunity for growth and not a safe place to raise children. It sickens me to see what has become of this once prosperous and peaceful, beautiful town. Read More

Columbus does Amazing!!! - 4/22/2020
I was born and raised in this cesspool city. It's a beautiful city, which is why I give it 1 star, but other than that, jobs are few and far between. You want to make decent money you have to drive out of the city. It's a consolidated government run by racists, so if you are of brown skin dont come here. Only place they like to see us is in the jail. There's nothing to do here, which is part of the reason for all the crime. No zoo, no entertainment, they have concerts every so often but that's it. Only thing this city is worth is being a bedroom community for Ft.Benning, that's Read More

Not the same city it once was - 12/29/2019
Columbus used to be a great city, not so much anymore. The crime is out of control and there seem to be more people on government aid than not. The undesirables have destroyed what was once a beautiful, safe city. Read More

Columbus ga is a nice place to live - 3/24/2019
Columbus is a nice town. I have lived here my whole life. We are 1 1/2 hours from Atlanta and 3 1/2 hours from Florida. Which is great for short weekend getaways. .
We have a great downtown area with nice restaurants and nightlife...
I have been pleased with our public schools..CSU is a great university.
We also have good shopping. The people here are friendly too. I love living Read More

Crime central - 8/29/2017
This is the worst city I have ever lived in. The crime here is unbelievable! We moved to a neighborhood that was supposed to be in a nicer and safe section of town, but burglaries happen weekly. The police department is severely understaffed and the mayor appears to be completely unconcerned with the high crime rate. There is an urban whitewater place here, but what they don't tell you is its in a part of the Chattahoochee River that is known for strong undercurrents causing numerous deaths from way back. What they also don't tell you is that here, the Chattahoochee is known to be contaminated with sewage overflow from Atlanta.

Not unlike most midsize cities in the South - 1/7/2014
Columbus is an interesting place in that it has some very unique qualities, but on the whole is your typical midsize Southern city in it's size range. This ended up being a lot longer than I anticipated, so I apologize for the length. I also didn't really proofread it so it may not make sense. Please comment if you have any questions or suggestions.

Business
--------

One of the big unique qualities is that there are a few large public companies founded and headquartered in Columbus, the most recognizable being Aflac (stock ticker AFL). Also Total Systems Services or TSYS (TSS), and Synovus Financial (SNV) were all founded in Columbus and employ a sizable portion of the middle to upper class. Carmike Cinemas (CKEC) is also headquartered there. Also, the original Coca-Cola was invented in Columbus by Dr. John Pemberton, and the W.C. Bradley Company and it's related families as well as the Woodruff family made boatloads of money after leading the Read More

Armpit of America - 10/29/2012
Columbus is by far the worst place I have ever lived in my life. Or visited for that matter. Not only are the schools a joke and completely unorganized, but the town is a trash hole. The people are backwards and small minded. Many people are racist. I have been assaulted by black people because I am white. I am used to being friends with black people, so this has been an adjustment. The parks are inadequate, there is not culture, and the community is not close knit but full of hatred. I would probably say that 50 percent of the people here are as trashy as the town itself. Cannot wait for my husband to be stationed elsewhere.

Watch out for the car with the license plate 2cent. They are racist and will assault you. Also, if you live in North Columbus, your car or house will probably be robbed; if not, at the very least, people from South Columbus will steal your Read More
