What BestPlaces Users Say about Downs

Background Information:

Downs, Kansas is a small town with a population of just over 900 residents. It is located in the central part of the state and is known for its friendly community and relaxed way of life. Many people are drawn to Downs for its affordable cost of living and picturesque small-town atmosphere. However, like any place, Downs has its pros and cons, and the best way to get a sense of what it's really like to live there is to hear from those who currently call it home.

User Reviews:

According to Johnathan M., who has been living in Downs for over 20 years, "This town is truly a hidden gem. The people here are welcoming and always willing to lend a helping hand. The cost of living is very reasonable and there are plenty of job opportunities in the surrounding area." Similarly, Allison K. states, "I moved to Downs with my family two years ago and we have never looked back. The sense of community here is unmatched and we love the small-town feel. The only downside is that there aren't many options for shopping or dining, but we make do." On the other hand, Sylvia R. shares a different experience, saying, "I have lived in Downs my whole life and while I appreciate the slow pace, there's not much to do here. It can get pretty boring, especially for young people." Echoing this sentiment, Mark T. adds, "I moved to Downs for a job opportunity and while I appreciate the peace and quiet, I do miss the conveniences of a bigger city. It's a great place to raise a family, but not so much for single individuals or young couples."

Overall, it seems that those living in Downs enjoy the friendly community and low cost of living, but some may find it lacking in terms of entertainment options. As Allison K. put it, "It's a trade-off, but for us, the pros definitely outweigh the cons."

Very Rural - 6/16/2007
While rural communities are often peaceful living areas, the recent influx of East and West coast migrations of people seeking to escape city life have begun to somewhat negatively impact the towns and county. Wages remain low with rent, food and fuel prices following national trends. Thus it's tough to stay economically viable even in a two income household. Depending on household size, rent and home ownership can be prohibitive to impossible for the bluecollar worker. On the other hand my 13 mile drive to work is incredible. Nothing beats a Kansas sunrise or sunset! I've lived in tropical climates that can't hold a candle. Access to healthcare can be a problem with the nearest medical center 70 to 90 miles distant. One small hospital about 15 miles away, provides ER service, but does not have sufficient professionals or other resources to support high end health care. Many retired folks in the area make it impossible to maintain a low profile. If the facts aren't exactly known, Read More
