Wrangell, AK is a small city located in southeast Alaska. With a population of 2,162 and a population density of 0.98 people per square mile, Wrangell is often referred to as “The Little City with the Big Heart.” This small city offers plenty of activities in and around town for all ages. Local businesses include shops such as the Wrangell Fish Market and Mad Hatters Antiques & Collectibles, restaurants such as The Oceanview Restaurant & Lounge and Marlintini’s Lounge, and entertainment centers including the Totem Theatre movie theater.
Outdoor activities are plentiful in Wrangell including skiing at Eaglecrest Ski Area, fishing for Pacific halibut or salmon on one of several charter boats available within walking distance from downtown. Other year-round activities include visiting Stikine River Charters to take a floatplane tour of the area or take an excursion to Le Conte Glacier to explore its glacial wonders. Visitors can also enjoy recreational activities such as camping at one of several nearby campgrounds or hunting for large game in season at nearby state parks.
Demographically speaking, Wrangell has a population that is largely comprised of Native Alaskans representing 48% of the total population according to the 2010 US Census Bureau Report. There are also other organizations in town offering services such as The United States Coast Guard Station which is home base for Search and Rescue operations, The Church Shelter which serves homeless populations throughout the region, and The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium which provides health care services to local residents.
In addition to all these great activities available in Wrangell there are also some great sporting events such as ice hockey tournaments held at the Tlingit Haida Community Center Arena annually during winter months. For those interested in baseball there is an amateur league called Wrangell baseball League that takes place during summer months where players will compete against each other from other communities throughout Alaska.
