Stony Brook University, located in Stony Brook, New York, is home to a diverse community of students and faculty members from all over the world. The university is also surrounded by an array of local religious congregations which serve the spiritual needs of the student population. Within walking distance from the campus are several houses of worship representing multiple faiths, including Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim denominations. These churches provide students with both a physical space and a supportive community to practice their faith. In addition to organized services and prayer meetings throughout the week, some churches also host events such as lectures and seminars that contribute to an open dialogue about religion on campus.
